CALIFORNIA DRUG AND ALCOHOL CLINIC BECOMES THE FIRST IN THE NATION TO OFFER DNA-CUSTOMIZED TREATMENT FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH A GENETIC PREDISPOSITION FOR ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR
MURRIETA, Calif., Dec. 12, 2007 ― A Better Tomorrow has become the first drug and alcohol treatment center in the nation to offer its patients Haveos, a DNA-customized nutritional supplement for individuals with a genetic predisposition for addictive behavior.
“A Better Tomorrow is one of the leading addiction treatment centers in Southern California. They are constantly striving to improve their success rate with addiction treatment, and we feel they will be able to effectively use Haveos through this initial product launch,” said Brian J. Meshkin, president and CEO of Salugen, Inc., a San Diego-based healthcare company that specializes in the development of genetic tests and DNA-customized therapeutics.
“We think Haveos could be quite effective in treating individuals whose addictions cannot be treated solely with behavioral-based treatment methods, such as one-one-one counseling, group therapy, cognitive therapy and psychotherapy,” said Jerrod Menz, A Better Tomorrow’s president, adding, “We are obviously quite pleased that Salugen has selected our clinic for their initial product launch.”
Meshkin said Haveos could potentially increase A Better Tomorrow’s batting average in treating individuals with a genetic predisposition to addictive behavior. He noted that the medical community has known for years that roughly a third of the world’s addicts develop addictive behaviors because of environmental factors, such as stressful relationships with their parents or other family members, while another third are genetically predisposed to develop addictive behaviors because of genetic causes, primarily involving the dysfunction of their dopamine receptors.
“This doesn’t mean they will automatically become addicts,” Meshkin said. “It just means they are more susceptible to addictive behavior than the general population. So what we have done is develop a nutritional supplement that corrects this imbalance by stimulating the release of dopamine in the brain.”
Menz said A Better Tomorrow patients who are interested in using Haveos as part of their treatment will have their DNA tested first to determine if they have the specific genes that are associated with addictive behavior. Customized doses of Haveos can then be formulated to meet the patient’s specific needs, he said.
Based in Murrieta, Calif., A Better Tomorrow has the highest level of certification of any drug or alcohol treatment center in southwest Riverside County. The clinic is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), placing it in the top 5 percent of drug and alcohol treatment clinics in California.
