RISING INCIDENCE OF GAMBLING ADDICTION CREATES PROBLEMS
AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DRUG AND ALCOHOL TREATMENT CLINIC
A Better Tomorrow developed a gambling treatment program to ensure the long-term effectiveness of its drug and alcohol treatment programs. The clinic now attracts clients from as far away as Nevada and Arizona
TEMECULA, Calif., July 5, 2006 ― When Jerrod Menz, Charles Anderson and Josie Gann opened A Better Tomorrow two years ago, their plan was simply to provide affordable drug and alcohol treatment programs in a private, suburban setting.
But it didn’t take long for the three entrepreneurs to realize that they needed to offer more than effective drug and alcohol treatment programs to keep their patients from engaging in self-destructive behaviors. They needed to offer treatment for compulsive gambling as well.
“We had some clients who would stop taking drugs or alcohol, but then they would discovery gambling, either online or at the local Indian casinos. They’d lose more money than they planned on. And then they would get depressed and relapse back into the other addiction,” said Menz, A Better Tomorrow’s president. “So we did the research, hired a gambling treatment expert and developed a new gambling treatment program, which we now offer in concert with our drug and alcohol treatment programs.”
A Better Tomorrow has since discovered that there is a shortage of affordable private treatment centers for gambling addiction in the southwestern United States. “When we started,” Menz said, “we thought we would cater primarily to patients in Riverside, San Diego and Orange counties. But now we’re getting calls from patients from throughout Southern California and from as far away as Las Vegas and Phoenix.”
Nevada opened a government-funded clinic for problem gamblers in Reno in November, but there’s already a waiting list for that facility, according to reports by The Associated Press. Other government-funded facilities are few and far between and there are relatively few private treatment centers for problem gamblers.
“We think we’ve found a worthwhile niche for our services,” Menz said. “By offering gambling treatment, we not only ensure the long-term effectiveness of our drug and alcohol treatment programs, but we can provide a much needed service for those individuals who solely need to overcome problems with gambling, which can be financially devastating to families,” Menz said.
Gambling addiction, he added, also has the highest suicide rate of any addictive behavior.
A Better Tomorrow is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), placing the Temecula, Calif.-based clinic in the top 5 percent of drug and alcohol treatment clinics in California. The clinic has provided drug, alcohol and gambling addiction treatment for nearly 300 people during the past two years.
